Solar Designer
Amelia Amon is a solar designer with an aesthetic approach to integrating sustainable energy into the built environment. Her consulting company Alt.Technica develops products and installations, including solar awnings and architectural features, solar signage for way-finding & device charging, dark-sky compliant solar LED lights, trackers for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), exhibits for science museums & environmental centers such as Liberty Science Center, NJ, Sustainable Development Fund of PA, and NY SunWorks Science Barge. Solar products include street furniture for solstreet, components for NY State Energy Research & Development Authority, (NYSERDA), freezer carts for Ben & Jerry's, a fountain for the Smithsonian National Design Museum.
Alt.Technica has been recognized by LightFair Innovative Product Awards, the Buckminster Fuller Awards, Wired Magazine’s NextFest Green Pavilion, Haute Green at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair, Cooper-Hewitt “Under the Sun” exhibit, Material Connexion’s “Glamorous Green”, Alessi SPA works by Women Designers, & Municipal Art Society’s “A New Era of Public Design”, Gallery 91, and numerous venues.
Amelia’s concern for the visual appeal of solar has been published in “The Art & Science of Solar Lighting”, “Lightening Solar; the Ephemeralization of Energy Production: ”, “Women in Green: Voices of Sustainable Design”, “Aesthetics: Ignore at our Peril”, “Sun Savvy Careers”, “Power Where You Need It, the Promise of Photovoltaics”, “Re-visioning Design & Technology; A Feminist Perspective”, “Sol of the City”, and "Women in Solar”.
Amelia has served as Chair of the Board of the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association (NESEA), board of the NY Solar Industries Assoc. (NYSEIA), and Chair of NY Chapter of the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA). She has a B.S. from University of Bridgeport, Engineering, Dept. of Industrial Design (awarded Distinguished Alumni 2015). She has taught at University of Bridgeport and Pratt Institute.
